Here's the game: Whodunit?

Cadence MackArthur, the president of fictional Theopolis College has been bludgeoned to death in her home after hosting a party for ten distinguished alumni, all of whom are now suspects. You are a homicide detective assigned to investigate the suspect “Rachel Behar.” Examining Rachel's computer, you notice some email exchanges with one Baruch “Bobby” Berkowitz.

Berkowitz is ostensibly an Israeli expat residing in New York City who owns and operates a wine importing business, Lamed Heh. When you check his visa status, a flag from the State Department indicates Berkowitz is actually an agent of Mossad, the Israeli secret police. But is he spying on Rachel, who is what she appears to be, or is he “running” Rachel as her handler, and is she actually a double agent for the Israeli government? Such spying is not unprecedented: In 1987 Jonathan Pollard, an American who was caught spying for Israel, pleaded guilty, and is serving a life sentence at a federal penitentiary in Butner, North Carolina. He is eligible for parole in 2015.

You learn that Rachel and Bobby were both raised on Kibbutz Kfar Etzion. Rachel develops sympathies for the Palestinians, while Bobby staunchly defends Israeli settlement policies. Before Bobby joined Mossad, he was an officer in the Israeli Army. Did Bobby and Rachel have contact when she was working on drought-resistant plants in the Negev?

When you go to New York to interview Berkowitz in person, you learn that he showed up dead in the trunk of his car, shot execution-style. Professional hit. Bobby was murdered before Cadence, so his alibi for her murder seems airtight. When you ask why the paperwork at the State Department did not reveal the death, you are told that it was classified info. The trip to New York was not a waste--the spooks are going to give you access to Bobby's computer, and are taking you to dinner at Peter Luger's. Unfortunately, they cannot talk about Bobby.

Is there a link between Bobby's murder and that of Cadence MackArthur? Is Rachel the link? All you have to go on is Bobby’s public website, http://lseagull.wix.com/lamed-heh, Bobby’s public postings on Facebook and Twitter, and, since you have Bobby’s computer, his emails to Rachel. Can you link the deaths of Bobby and Cadence? Can you find evidence of a motive for Rachel? Good luck.

Jean Vadeboncoeur wants to help

My electronic Literature class at Kean University is participating, along with 11 other colleges, in creating a "generative" murder mystery: the president of fictional Theopolis College is murdered, and Kean University has been asked to develop the character of the suspect "Rachel Bahar," an Israeli ex-patriot, graduate of Theopolis, now working for the US Department of Agriculture as a drought management expert. My character, Baruch "Bobbie" Berkowitz, is a wine importer who is really an agent of Mossad, the Israeli secret police who is spying on Rachel. His profile picture is me, age 16, at a kibbutz holding an Uzi. The Kean students are creating Tweets and Facebook entries for our characters to provide clues to who killed Cadence MackArthur, the president of Theopolis College.

Bobby Berkowitz's website

The artifact I am creating for Baruch Berkowitz is a website for his wine importing business, “Lamed Heh,” which is Hebrew for “The Thirty-five.” The business is a cover for his real work as a secret agent for the Mossad (the Israeli secret police).

For the first round assignment, I inserted links to real events involving a massacre at an Israeli “kibbutz,” a communal farm that was typical of early Israeli settlements. In 1948, during Israel’s war of independence, thirty-five officers of the “Haganah”—the Israeli army—were slaughtered while attempting to bring supplies to the besieged Kfar Etzion Kibbutz. After the “Six Day War,” Israel took control of the area, and in 1967, the survivors  of the original settlement returned to reestablish Kfar Etzion.


Rachel and Bobby were both raised on Kfar Etzion. Rachel develops sympathies for the Palestinians, while Bobby staunchly defends Israel settlement policies. The conflict between Bobby and Rachel is related to Rachel’s motive to kill Cadence MacArthur.   

For the second round, I intend to add links that contain secret messages related to Mossad. For obvious reasons, the links cannot be easy to follow, so that only someone who knows what to look for can find the clues. I hope to construct a “game” not unlike some of the E-Literature we have been reading: Imagine that you are a homicide detective investigating a possible connection between the murder of Cadence MacArthur and the murder of Bobby Berkowitz (yeah, he’s dead too); you are searching Bobby’s website for whatever might shed light on either or both murders.

My experiment in "hiding clues" is found on the "Our Story" page: in the text is a hyperlink associated with the Hebrew word, "Haverim." Visitors cannot find this page unless they click on the link--its not otherwise in the navigation.

Baruch Berkowitz Backstory

“Bobby” Berkowitz, as he is known in the US, is ostensibly an Israeli ex-pat living in NYC where he operates a wine import business specializing in Israeli wines. He is actually an agent of Mossad, the Israeli secret police. His cover permits him unquestioned travel to Israel, France, Germany and other wine producing regions.

When you first meet Bobby what strikes you are his eyes—small penetrating eyes. When he turns his gaze upon you, the experience is like being penetrated by a laser. Yet his stare is cold and the rest of his affect is impassive. Even if you never learn his true profession, you have no difficulty believing that he is willing to kill with cold dispatch.
   
Bobby met Rachel in a small town outside of Beersheba, when he was an officer in the Israeli Army and she was working for a chemical company doing research in the Negev.

Rachel Behar Backstory

If Rachel is 44 in 2014, she was born in 1970; following the normal progression, she would have graduated HS in 1987, college in 1991, and grad school in 1994. According to the fact pattern, she graduated Theopolis in 1996. Of course, Rachel was born in Israel, and so did not follow the “normal progression.” So, what did she do during the missing 5 years?

Assuming that she went to MIT grad school immediately after Theopolis, she would have been in Cambridge, Mass from September ‘96 to May ‘99, and in the Negev with her chemical company from 1999 to 2002.

Does she still have family in Israel? While working for the chemical company, did she have contact with family, old friends, former lovers?

We should create a name and a website for the chemical company. Can we use a real company like Monsanto?

The 3 years in the Negev are important for my backstory, because in my scenario, that is when she met Bobby Berkowitz, and may or may not have had an affair with him during this time.

Does she love Bobby or hate him? Does Bobby love her or hate her? 

My scenario is that Bobby is in the US to spy on Rachel because of her anti-government views in supporting the Palestinian cause. Did she have contact with Arabs while in Israel? Did she have an affair with a Palestinian? Is Bobby motivated by personal jealousy or professionalism in supporting his mission to spy on Rachel?

How does any of this tie in to the murder of the president of Theopolis?
   
Were Bobby and Rachel secretly on the same team? Was Bobby “running” Rachel—was she a spy for Israel? Rachel is now working for the US government (Department of Agriculture), and may be in a position to be a double agent for Israel.

Did the president find out about the relationship between Bobby and Rachel?

Did Bobby end up dead in the trunk of his Cadillac? Shot at close range—gangland style? Did the president give sensitive info about Rachel to someone who works for the US government who decided that Bobby needed to be made dead?

Is Rachel’s motive for killing the president personal over the murder of Bobby? Or professional, in that the Mossad wanted the president dead and aware of Rachel’s access to him, thought she might be in a good position to carry out the hit? Was Rachel a contract killer hired by Mossad to kill him?

Were clues left at the scene "red herrings" to remove suspicion from Rachel?

Was Rachel motivated by grief and the desire for revenge over the death of Bobby? Or is her motivation a combination of professional and personal?

Rachel has attachment to a lot of sketchy organizations that could be pulling power strings behind the scenes:

The Cape: A student's review

Note: J. R. Carpenter has posted a “Backstory” on the web (http://luckysoap.com/talks/thecapethebackstory.html) in which she talks about the genesis of the project and her process, motivations and obstacles. I have only skimmed it to get a sense of its content, but will not read it until I have completed this blog entry, and may or may not add a postscript based upon my reaction to it. As I type this note, I have written all aspects of this blog entry except the part about the critical reception to The Cape. I ran across the “Backstory” during my research about what critics have had to say.

Genre: I am new to this, but I guess “The Cape” is a hypertext story. By clicking “links,” the reader unfolds the story. The technique of using the capabilities of electronic technology not only engages the “reader” (viewer? participant?) but permits the story teller to avoid unnecessary narrative effort by using photographs with captions to let the story tell itself. Unlike other “E-Lit” that this course has allowed me to experience, the reader does not have the “freedom” of choice; the hypertext is used as an innovative way for the creator to tell her story, rather than as a “game” in which the reader creates the story.

One critic (Leonardo Flores in “I love poetry, http://iloveepoetry.com/?p=366) calls the piece a “hypertext poem.”

Literary analysis: “The Cape” is a nostalgic examination of a girl’s childhood memories of winters spent on Cape Cod with her grandparents: some joy; some regret. The story also touches on how girls can be confined to gender roles, but also can be unrestrained. To her grandfather, she is a genderless “child” to whom he cannot talk, except in the language of whistling. Apparently, they communicate just fine. Grandmother, on the other hand, cautions her not to place her fingers in her mouth, as that is not lady-like, and not to “ask too many questions,” presumably because asking questions—challenging what is accepted—is the purview of boys in a pre-feminist world view. The two ancestors represent the yin and yang of androgyny in a young woman.

The strain of gender identification is also nicely reflected in the wordplay on “spit”—a noun referring to a narrow piece of land between two bodies of water, and a verb meaning to eject saliva. The aerial views of the “spit” evoke a long thin penis; “spitting” is an activity not typically associated with women, unless they are ball players. [The sexual puns just keep coming—I meant “ball players” in the sense of baseball as in “A League of Their Own,” and not in the sense of women who fondle. Whether the author intended this reaction in me, I do not know, but I do know that sexual naïveté is common in young women who have not yet recognized their power.]  

A young girl coming to terms with the world around her, is a timeless, universal theme, which in “The Cape,” is subtly underscored by evocations of the Romantic Period’s appreciation of the insignificance of mankind in the face of nature: aerial views of Cape Cod—shown by an animation of a series of stills shot over a sequence spanning forty-three years—as well as by a photo of a glacial boulder on the beach. The Cape is subtly changing, while remaining essentially the same. That the gap between the aerial photos is first from 1938 to 1952, then to 1962, then 1971 to 1974, seems to focus first on her grandparent’s youth, and then her own. We wonder why these particular years were chosen—were they all that was available, or do they hold significance for the three people who inhabit this timeless environment?

Technical: Happy that last semester I took “Digital Communication” with Professor Tung, in which I had to make both an audio tape and a short film. The course gave me some insight into the technicalities of how the visual and audio parts of “The Cape” were constructed. Using the “Ken Burns” technique—panning different aspects of a still photograph to create the illusion of movement—the creator adds mystery to the images as different aspects and details of the photos are revealed.

Reaction: I started reading (looking at? listening to?) “The Cape” early one morning, before I had washed my face. I would have liked a “pause” button, because the grimbles in the corners of my eyes were bothering me, but I couldn’t stop watching. I shouted to my wife to wake up and bring me coffee, which she did, but after 41 years of marriage, she refused to swab my face. What will I do when I am old if she refuses to take care of me? And who is going to take care of her?

Idiot. If I don’t click on the next frame the thing is paused. Just my luck that I had the desire to fidget during the whistling segment—it’s the longest one. But when it was over, I still did not want to leave the computer to wash my face; instead, I re-clicked the segment and sat alone in my room trying to follow the instructions for how to whistle. Just then, while my fingers were in my mouth, my wife entered with the coffee, and gave me the look that says, “You are too weird; I am not asking.”

I kept waiting for a cave, and then I noticed that the title is "The Cape," not "The Cave."

Critical reception:
[Written after the “Note” that serves as preface to this blog entry] J. R. Carpenter, born in 1972, is well known in the field of Electronic Literature. A poet by inclination and an artist and art critic by training, she writes about such nonfiction subjects as textile art and the history of the internet. If having a Wikipedia page is evidence of fame, then she is famous. That entry informs us that Carpenter now lives in South Devon, England. She serves as faculty for Performance Writing and Electronic literature on the In (ter)ventions: Literary Practice at the Edge program at The Banff Centre. She is a PhD researcher at Falmouth University in association with University of the Arts London.

Among the few critical examinations of her work is Leonardo Flores in “I love poetry,” http://iloveepoetry.com/?p=366, who writes of The Cape,

The use of maps, images, video, audio, geological and scientific data, and the structure of memoir all gesture towards verisimilitude, but the Carpenter’s statement above and the story itself undermine that tendency we have towards trusting that kind of information…Can we trust the speaker?
Another critical examination (that I was unable to find through my own search, but was included by the author in her “Backstory”) is Scott Coterall’s essay published in Hunter Gatherer:

The Cape seeks to convolute fact and fiction by taking us on a user-controlled journey of fragmented narrative…[it] gracefully addresses the tension between the knowing of and mapping of place and memory by bringing together the connotative powers of fact and fiction.”
Coterall’s comment resonates with me; I agree with him.

Research reveals the backstory behind “The Backstory” adverted to in the preface: a class, not unlike our own, at Capilano University reached out to Carpenter in anticipation of a discussion of The Cape. Now I have read the backstory, and am busy slapping myself on the back (no pun intended) that I picked up on the sexual aspects of The Cape.” Carpenter writes, in her essay "A brief history of the Internet as I know it so far,”

The Internet was totally textual back then. It had no interface. The joke of the day was, on the Internet no one knows you're a dog. Everyone was talking about gender politics and how, on the Internet, you could role-play and construct your own identity. At the same time that everyone was obsessed with sexuality they were all claiming disembodiment, which seemed like a contradiction, even then.

Regarding her use of black and white, Carpenter says,  “I was attracted to the black and white aesthetic of the Environmental Geologic Guide to the Cape Cod National Seashore… Although I have since made many works in colour, The Cape returns to the black and white aesthetic of those early works.”  Despite the ill-conceived attempt to “colorize” old-time back and white movies, many makers of motion pictures prefer the stark images and purity of the originals.

Twelve Blue



Physically difficult to read: the blue on blue small font gave me a headache. The computer I am using has a wide screen; I tried to reduce the size but could not.
When I clicked on “one” and read the screen, only one area was hypertexted, so I clicked on that. The experience was much more linear than I was lead to believe it would be. When I clicked on “two,” I did have choices, and was taken variously to designs as well as text.
Regarding the prose, if it can be called prose, the text seemed like steam of consciousness poetry. Some of the wording was clever (“embers of September;” “mouths of months;” “lookout for her outlook”) but not my “cup of tea” (also clever: “tea cups and tin cups.”) “Embers of Septembers” is a nice image of a waning summer; “lookout for her outlook” is beyond me.
I would have quit had I not been assigned to spend ninety minutes with the thing.
Back to the same screen, this time by a different route. How interesting (sarcasm). I would like it better if so many sentences did not begin with “There are…” or “There were…”
A colleague walks by and says, “Wow, that must be hard to read,” reacting to the blue on blue.”
“You don’t know the half of it,” I reply.
